Kinja'd!!!1 Kinja'd!!! 24

spent the night getting a new to me pc up and running.

Went from an accountant special:

Kinja'd!!!

to a Engineering workstation

Kinja'd!!!

It came with a Quadro k4200 (any one wanna buy it?! make me an offer) and I swapped over the GTX 950 for now. Probably pick up a EVAG 1050ti SC and swap the 950 back to the other system.

Now to wait for a billion updates to finish up! and then I’ll see if a workstation can let it’s hair down and do some gaming!

All those sweet sweet cores.

Nice. Nothing wrong with the i5 on the old machine, but I’ll definitely take all that RAM from the new one. I’m looking at building a new machine, and I’m definitely annoyed at how expensive RAM is these days. For my current machine I paid $130 for 16GB (7 years ago), and for the new machine it looks like 16GB starts at around $170 today (granted for DDR4 rather than DDR3, which is still pricey, starting around $115).

I hear you on that. I’m feeling the pinch of the bit-tards on the GPU pricing right now. I am stoked for this ram though I don’t think I’ll ever really use it, but nothing wrong with 32GB of ECC DDR4!

Also yeah the old system ran like a champ! if this didn’t cost me short of $150 buck it would never have happened.

Yeah, I paid ~$475 for my 1070 in 2016, which seemed absurd, but the prices never really came down much from there, and the cheapest 1070 you can get today appears to be around $700. Sort of think I should be mining despite my contempt for the whole crypto-currency thing if they are really useful enough to be worth those prices.

Yeah, great card for it’s purpose. Wanna buy it?

It’s crazy how prices just hold or go up on them! The worst part is the AMD stuff is way better at block chain then the nvidia gear. Wish they would stop using It!

I know but “cores” sounds better! I had a workstation with a Xeon a long time ago but I’ve never used a recent one in anything other than a server and that isn’t all that much fun.

if i had any purpose for a quadro i’d probably pick it up, but as it stands, i think even a 1050ti can soundly kick my 960 to the curb, even with a soft overclock.

Dang, I just had one built with 16 gb RAM, i7 7700, gtx 1060 and a 500 GB SSD. Eventually going to add another 2 8GB sticks, 500 GB SSD (though the new intel boot drives are enticing too), and 6+ TB HDD (along with some more substantial cooling), but I’m definitely going to wait for prices to come down a bit.

What do you play for games? So far I’m just playing PUBG and Forza and then using it for work and school. Still have yet to get above ~55* C core temp so I’m not too concerned since my bootcamped MBP was hitting ~90* C playing H1Z1 on low settings while on a cooling stand.

My wife is going to flip when I tell her that waiting (because she was trying to make me suffer for the cause) just bumped the cost of my new video card by $500. Damned crypto craze hitting us poor gamers in the wallet. I might have to contemplate an SLI setup at that price...

The i7 7700 is a sick chip! so fast! little jelly wish I had one over this Xeon but I aint getting one for what this rig cost. I’d like a 1060 tho! probably just gonna get a 1050 ti. As of now I only play Pubg! love that fucking game!

This is what I got to replace it. I am currently working towards virtualizing all my families gaming rigs (4 of them) onto this single box. It has enough slots for each virtual machine to have dedicated graphics card.

Kinja'd!!!

I just need the money to finish. $1200+ is a lot of money for graphics cards. I was only able to afford the machine because it’s free.

My current basic consumer-grade rig...

Kinja'd!!!

i7-8700, 32GB DDR4 (ouch, so expensive), GTX 1060 3GB (ouch, but not as ouch because I bought it in October last year), 2x 512GB 960PRO NVMe SSDs (RAID 0/Striping), & Z370 Mini-ITX board... It’s pretty decent and drives all three of my monitors with zero trouble. The drives are the star, though, reading at something ridiculous like 6GB/s...

Compared to consumer parts of the era, they were pretty good, though...
